F.A.Q.

Where are the solutions to this year's contest? (NEW)

The solutions can be found in a zip file located here.

How many schools have been invited?

All Michigan high schools were included in the initial mailing, so you may be competing with schools from anywhere in the state.

How many members does each team consist of?

Teams may consist of 2 or 3 students.

Can we have more than one team?

We are currently registering a maximum of 4 teams per school, but this may change depending on the number of schools that participate. We have a limited amount of space; therefore, in order for us to best service the contestants we may need to allow only one team per school.

May one team utilize Visual Basic and another Visual C++?

Sure, we do not have a problem with different teams using different environments.

Will my team have access to materials in the testing area?

Yes, your students can bring with them anything that is "Hard Copy.” Examples: books and print outs. However, they cannot bring the following: Key Drives, CD's, Disks, (Computer Media of any sort), calculators, or any electronic devices.

If they can't bring a calculator, how will they do the math?

I should say use their brain =), but we will have the Windows calculator accessible on the desktop.

What environment will the students be programming in?

The environment will be Windows XP.

What languages will be supported?(UPDATED)

Visual Basic and Visual C++ .NET 2005, GNU C++ 2.95, and Java 1.5 with will be provided.

Will the Java Keyboard class be provided?(UPDATED)

Java 1.5 already includes equivalent functionality with the Scanner (System.in).

In what format should programs be in?

This year we will be accepting programs in Console mode, and GUI Interface mode.

How will input and output be accepted?

In Console mode the students will need to be able to read data from a file called index.txt and output to a file called output.txt OR output to the screen.

In GUI mode, students can read from a file called index.txt and output to a file called output.txt OR output to the screen. Students can also have an open Input box where the judges can copy and paste the “Test Data.” Judges WILL NOT type the data in, so the Input box must be able to accept multiple lines at once.

Are these answers final?

Yes, the above questions are resolved for this year. We still reserve the right to change any other rules at any time. If you have not read through the rules recently please read them here.

I still have more questions what do I do?
